Ha, finally getting around to posting about some of our summer exploits. Well, our most major at least. There will be more to come, maybe a wrap up of summer post in the next week, with the rest of the highlights. Unfortunately, August was a little bit of a blur for me, so I did not have a lot to write about. This camping trip was everything I needed to help heal myself in August. Of course, I am not completely there, I am still fighting through my pain, sadness, and anger; but this trip held so much meaning for me as a way to remember and honour my Dad, and as a means to spend time with my children and husband in the face of incredible loss.
The first day the swimming was excellent, and we had Grandma and Grandpa come to visit in the evening. It was so lovely. And the sunset! The second day the rain swept in and we spent most of our day at the campsite having fun together and just relaxing. We ventured in to Grand Bend a bit in the afternoon, as something else to do that day and to plan for the next day when we were visiting for my daughter's birthday, but other than that we just hung out. Our third day we spent the morning canoeing, which was soothing and fun. The kids were not interested at first, but eventually found putting their hand in the water was exciting and loved waving at other boaters. We then spent the rest of the day in Grand Bend. Another great part about the Pinery is being able to skip the crowds at the Grand Bend beach, but still be close for Grand Bend shopping, food, or even their evening entertainment. Although, because of the rain the day before, the water was choppy with waves and we found it hard to swim for the rest of our trip, both at the Pinery and Grand Bend. We started our trip to Grand Bend going to the splash pad, and luckily had lovely weather for the outing. We ordered our dinner, as requested by our daughter (yes, she is just like me when it comes to sushi...obsessed), from Midori Sushi. We ordered it to go and ate it right near the splash pad so the kids could go back in when they were done. The sushi was just exactly what we needed and wanted for such a warm and beautiful evening. We ordered a California roll for my daughter, her absolute favourite, while my husband ordered the Firecracker Shrimp roll and I ordered the One Love roll (which was the best of the bunch in my opinion). One Love was the perfect combination of flavours and spice with the mayo. We were a tad disappointed with the Firecracker roll, as we did not find the crab altogether spicy. If it was not meant to be spicy it would have been quite tasty, but it lacked what it promised. We also ordered wonton nachos for us and the kids, mostly my husband and I scarfed them down, although the little ones loved the crispy wontons. These were really good, and very different. Although, in future I think I would just order two One Love rolls, because, oh my gosh, everything about the roll was perfect!
For dessert we landed at the Grand Bend Sweet Shoppe, for ice cream. I was so hoping for a milkshake, but they had unfortunately turned off their soft serve for maintenance. So, instead I settled on their ice cream (do not worry, it was still tasty). My daughter opted for a special cone for her birthday, the chocolate dipped, sprinkle waffle cone. For the ice cream, she ordered cotton candy (because purple and pink), my husband ordered Moose Tracks to share with my son, and I ordered the raspberry or cherry swirl I believe (hard to remember, but it was delicious). I was very tempted to buy all of their treats, because wow they smell and look good, especially the taffy. The last night there, we planned on going to the Rum & Spirits show being put on by the park. Which was a mix of comedy, history and horror. Mostly it was a history of the parks past, which I found to be quite interesting. Unfortunately, the beginning of the show the cast called out like coyotes to let the announcer know they were ready, which scared our daughter. So about a quarter of the way in to the show, having that in her mind and it being pitch black out, we had to take her back to camp. However, she did not miss the part where a Scottish man ripped off his cumbersome pants in preference of his kilt. She laughed so much, it was too cute (talked about it nonstop the next day). So, the show was a little too mature for her it seems, but we had fun for the bit we were there, and enjoyed our walk back to camp.
