David Bowie is amazing! I had to start the blog this way, since this past Saturday I went with my mom and dad to the AGO to see David Bowie is...and what he is is amazing (birthday present from my Mom <3). The amount that this man has done for all aspects of the music industry, fashion, movies, etc. is profound. He would see a trend or something in an old film and he would take that look and re-imagine it into something incredible. For example: when he appeared on TV for the first time with his androgynous look, red hair, makeup, and colourful space outfit, singing Ziggy Stardust; the look was appropriated from Clockwork Orange's main character Alex, but it was fashioned brightly and outrageously to really make him pop and stand out. So much so that teenagers around the world asked for more, more, more!!! The exhibit throws you into the mind of a man without a set identity, who appropriates images and characters to represent the space he is in at any given moment. The real truth is that David Bowie himself is hard to pin down. I have loved David Bowie since I can remember, with two parent's who think he is great (been to two of his concerts) and growing up watching The Labyrinth every chance I could. There was no way I was getting away from him. He is mesmerizing in everything he does. From his Diamond Dog album, to his Thin White Duke persona, to Space Oddity and thrusting space travel into the minds of everyone, to his appearance in the Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me film. As well, he knew how to continue to excel in the business, captivating a new, younger fan club when he appeared as Jareth, Goblin King, in The Labyrinth (his goblin king staff and crystal ball were there). He is AMAZING! And the exhibit, as breathtaking as his career. The costumes he loaned, the designs, the pages of his written songs, song book, photos, albums, and of course an entire stage set (complete with costumes behind the screens that lit up intermittently. I urge everyone to go, whether a fan or casual listener.

If you can get to Toronto before November 27th you can see it. If not, check out some of the photos here (I couldn't take any as it asked for people not to): http://torontoist.com/events/event/david-bowie-is-is-taking-over-the-ago/20130924-david-bowie-ago-1718-photo_by_corbin_smith.
