This past Christmas I took an idea I found on a list, of great gifts to give from a child, and rolled with it. Wasn't sure how the outcome would be, but wanted to see if it would work or not. I went with a simple enough concept. Find a frame that fits two images. One image would be a photograph of our little one painting, and the other would be an original painting from that photo session. The hardest part turned out to be finding the perfect frame for what I had in mind. I wanted a long wall frame, in white, with white canvas board, that would highlight the colours of her painting and the photo of her. What we ended up purchasing were folding frames, that look like books. We purchased two white and two brown, and they actually turned out to look incredible when we finally filled them. We weren't too sure how the babe would take to painting, as we were thinking only finger painting to be possible at this point, and we were right. But she took to it like a fish to water. She smoothed the paint around, laughed, and the photo we ended up getting of her painting was more amazing then I could ever have imagined. When she first started putting colour on the paper she was so happy with the outcome she picked up the piece of paper and studied her own art, smiling the whole time. My heart was swelling and doing flips and I was kicking myself for not doing this sooner. I had an amazing photo shoot with her, painting away as I got right in her face and she could have cared less.
By the end we had three large sheets of paper painted beautifully. The hardest part came next, deciding which way to cut it down so there would be four pieces to give out. We chose yellow for my husband's parents (or at least the piece with the most yellow) as his mom's favourite colour is yellow, then from there we went with if there was a full hand print or how the colour would be highlighted in the frame. All the little cut out leftovers we kept, my husband got a hand painted bookmark out of the deal (which he loves and uses every day). Also, we claimed a larger piece for our own wall. I even went about making home made wrapping paper to spruce up how cool these little gifts were, from out little one. I added little sprigs of Christmas tree. All those who received one said they loved them. So glad we did it, so happy to pass on the joy our little one had in making them.
