Leila was a dancer, trying out for Julliard, excited about the next step in her life when she died. She had hopes and aspirations, a family and friends, and all of these she can remember (where the other angels know nothing of their pasts). Leila finds the other Angels stiff, unfeeling, kind to her out of loyalty and obligation. Her eternal life is set to be a long/lonely existence. She feels angry at being the only one capable of loving her sisters, which leads to trouble and temptation. She is also the only one who can lie. I did like some aspects of Leila, but sometimes I found her to be too contradictory. Where she would say one thing, but then immediately do the complete opposite of what she was thinking. Like pushing Michael away, only to kiss him five minutes later. She was fierce though, and I could understand her frustration and pain at having no one like her, to be unique, separate, different, but only really wanting to fit in and get along. The writing style of this novel threw me off. There was quite a bit of repetition, Leila complaining about her lot in life, or the afterlife. But, more so, there was an excessive use of uncommon words and strange paragraph formatting and sentence structure. As though the author was trying to write in a biblical, old English style. It was hard to follow at times and sometimes sucked me right out of the story. However, there were also some cleverly written moments and beautiful, unforgettable quotes. It was often a roller coaster ride of stunning wordplay and overly, unnecessarily complex paragraphs. I am interested to see where the series is going, but unsure about keeping up with reading when I find the structure not to my liking. Has anyone else had a problem like this with a book or series? Did you muddle on because you liked the concept? One of my favourite quotes: "If you craft an artist to be a weapon, they shall only see the beauty in death."
