Don't get me wrong, it was a well written graphic novel, but it did not capture my attention as much as I was expecting it would. To be honest, I could not really connect with any of the characters, and I felt the two leads had more anger than love for each other. I did enjoy that the narrator was their child in the future. She had lots of interesting advice. I loved the explanations of parenthood spliced with hard or terrible moments in her parent's lives. Everyday parental concerns juxtaposed with extreme situations, emphasizing the fear, pain and sleeplessness of being a new parent. The graphics and colouring were outstanding. Sparks of colour here and there, in an otherwise dull and dismal world. Oftentimes the bright colours were accompanied by horrible moments or grotesque images, tricking your brain with beauty where there was only ugliness. There were strange aliens, robots, horned moon mages fighting winged humanoids. The leaders of the winged creatures were half robot and half man. It seemed to be an allegory of demons and angels. There were several very uncomfortable panels that shook me as a reader and made me want to close the book (in particular the sex planet). These moments tackled some very heavy and realistic social issues well. Even though I have seen a lot of gross and abhorrent moments in graphic novels, these really seemed to make my skin crawl. I do not think I will pick up Saga volume 2 anytime soon, I have too many other books on my TBR that interest me more. However, when, or if, I do get back in to this series, I hope for more world development and characterization.
