First of all, this book is narrated by the hacked, self-aware robot and that is everything. This novella is original, entertaining and easy to read. Murderbot is suffering from an existential crises the entire time. Honestly, this SecUnit is every introvert, it does not want to interact with humans outside of comms and would really just love to stay in its cubicle all day and watch its favourite show. The characterization of this rogue robot is so well done, being annoyed and frightened by its own emotions and these humans trying to treat it like one of them. It makes for a funny scenario. Add to that having to work together against an unknown enemy on an unknown planet, perfect situational comedy, with lots of thrilleresque/science fiction vibes.
The crew tend to blend together, with the most memorable being Dr. Mensah. However, the crew dynamic is well written and captivating. I love the representation in the novellas as well (ARO/ACE, LGBTQ, Polyamorous relationships). This is a world of people and robots just being themselves without any discrimination. In fact, this crew is trying to heap more rights onto the unwilling SecUnit. As well, Murderbot is genderless and not completely described, so the reader can imagine the robot any which way they please (the only bits you know for sure is that it is a robot with organic parts). The world building is powerful, with lots to expand on and elaborate in the next three novellas, and in the upcoming full length novel. Such as, The Corporation that controls everything, which provides contracts for groups exploring new worlds, but is also so cheap they provide faulty equipment. There are robots, augmented humans, humans, evil exploration teams, hacked robots, and many fun shows for our Murderbot to enjoy. I highly recommend checking out this novella, and then probably moving right on to the next.
