What follows is a tense, dramatic, fear inducing look into the makings of a serial killer. The driving force behind desire, control, fear and redemption/revenge. The story is well thought out, the background detailed. I enjoyed the switch from Harry (Now) and Alice (Then) in the first part of the novel, to Caitlin (Now) and Jack (Then) in the second half. Also, I was super in to the fact Harry's father, Bill, was a hardcore book nerd. That he perused garage sales, hunted through estate sales, and loved himself some vintage crime novels. I also liked the hidden depth added to the novel by the novels that Harry remembers his father giving him, or that he selects while at his father's home. I loved the book store and the cat, Lew. While I guessed the outcome pretty early on, hence the four stars instead of the five, I did enjoy the suspense, the perspective changes (which added depth to the story and much needed background to characters and their motivations) and the twist ending. A well written thriller. I was given a copy of this book by HarperCollins Canada, in exchange for an honest review.
