This is also a graphic novel about preservation and the importance of the coral reef and the creatures that inhabit the sea. Mae and the villagers must remember, while they may be a small community, any little bit of change, in order to save and protect, will help revive the dwindling reef. The colours and visuals are stunning. I loved when Lana remembered her mother, as all of those scenes in the past are tinged with magic, light, and happiness. The coral reef scenes are immersed in vibrant pinks, oranges and blues; perfect colours for depicting the vivacity of life under the sea. The Aquicorns blend with their surroundings, repairing the reef, while reflecting the colours. Aure, the strange sea woman, is beautiful and blue; everything she wears is magical, she is as mysterious as the reef that she cares for and protects. A wonderful love story between humanity (Aunt Mae) and the sea (Aure). The need for the sea and all that it can provide, but also the need to protect and save this vital environment from harm. Sometimes human ignorance, or greed, causes irreparable damage, but small efforts can lead to great change. I was blown away by the message, the love, and the beauty of this book. I highly recommend it to audiences of all ages. In fact, as soon as I borrowed it, my daughter was immersed in the book (she also loved The Tea Dragon Society), I had to wait for her to fall asleep to reclaim the book.
