Lena makes a fatal decision one day, in defiance of a future planned for her, which results in her banishment from the sea and the loss of her beloved family. This was a quick read, the beginning of a series. However, it was full of passion, betrayal, greed, lust and courage. Lena was a fabulously written protagonist. She was a merrow prone to mistakes, but she has a mind of her own, a desire to be free and to be herself, in a world that would have her be a docile wife to a cause she does not believe in. She fights for what is right, still finding herself to be strong, even when she is thrust onto legs and into a world completely unknown to her, all on her own. This is a book about female empowerment and courage. Lena is still learning, but she knows that she is more than what merrow-men and men would make of her. Her loneliness is all consuming and your heart breaks for her situation, feeling her pain and despair. You can understand her hesitation when it comes to trusting people around her, especially when it comes to Jace. There is power in the words about how she feels when it comes to him, how he saved her, but does that mean she needs to consider him her savior and allow him anything he wishes from her? And if he had not come along, maybe she would have saved herself (this line was perfection!) Lena's realizations deserve all the fist bumps. Soren is also a well written character. He makes for an enigmatic "hero", and his character is largley defined by his ability to grant distance to Lena, to show her respect and enjoy her independent mind and will. He is in fact the only gentleman, other than Edmund, that she meets. He is therefore separated from all the other men Lena comes into contact with, all of them lewd and presumptuous, who do not understand the concept of personal space. Soren does not demand, he listens and he treasures their friendship above all else. He does not immediately assume he has rights to Lena, he body or her affections. This was a great twist on the usual story of a silent mermaid who must use her body to entice her lover. In this tale, the mermaid uses her intelligence and her friendliness to find love. I was given a copy of this ebook by The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review.
