Luc has very real abandonment issues, which stem from his father and a former lover. However, tied in with that is major trust issues attributed also to that former lover. So, he has a hard time opening his heart and uses sarcasm and "meanness" to keep others distant from him. Easier to create a barrier than to possibly be hurt again, even if that barrier means that he no longer feels like himself or has not felt real happiness for a long while. Oliver deals with emotional abuse from his family, which leads him to be overly controlling of himself and his relationships. He tries too hard because he worries he is not enough. But, being in a "fake" relationship allows him to relax and be his true self. The relationship between Luc and Oliver is so genuine. They compliment each other well, and, even when faking it, are more caring for each other than any other relationship they have every been in. They are supportive, funny, sarcastic, cute, cuddly, and romantic without meaning to be. They do so much for each other, helping to rebuild trust, to expel their anxiety about themselves and their worth. I also enjoy the friend and coworker dynamics in the book. The friends are protective and honest, both Oliver's and Luc's. They want what is best for both men, seeing the pain and loneliness they deal with on a daily basis. They notice how they continuously push people away, whether romantically or in terms of friendship. Luc's coworkers are all so awkward and endearing, throughout the novel he learns to appreciate their help. Also, Luc's relationship with his mother was beautiful. She was honest with him, supportive, understanding and pushed him to see himself and to realize his own worth. She takes his side in terms of his father; a selfish lump who abandoned them both when Luc was three, but is trying to find his way back into their lives now. She is loyal to a fault and her and her best friend, Judy, are too funny. An adorable book about two men falling in love, while faking a relationship. What more can you ask for?
