This poem reflects on being shaped by our decisions, our actions or inaction, our history and our dreams of the future. This poem is about accepting yourself, accepting your pain, your growth, your past, and your present. Recognizing that you may never reach your dream, but you should never accept defeat and also realizing the true achievement is the path you take to reach that dream. Jason Reynolds has a very distinctive voice that resonates and reverberates right off the page. The words were emotional and purposeful. Each phrase held deeper meaning, whether using certain vernacular to emphasize how society may shape us, but it cannot crush us. The wording also suggests using the perceptions others may have of us to bolster our purpose and our drive. Take the negative and use it as kindling to further fuel our dreams. This is a wonderful book for a graduation gift, a retirement gift, or to anyone starting a new adventure or finally grasping their happiness. It is the perfect gift for youth looking for a cheering song or for someone deciding midway through life to pursue something they thought was no longer achievable for them. I also love that this poem began before Jason Reynolds found a place within the writing world. It was a push for himself, as much as for anyone reading. This poem is his ode to dreamers everywhere. To continue dreaming, to bring big (and small) ideas to life. To brighten the world with your spark! Great Lines:
