I also laughed so hard at her essay on boy vs. man, because YES! Felt this one so much, that maturity in someone who actually owns a home and puts down roots is such a turn on. For me, I definitely prefer a man, who is committed to choosing a purpose and direction in life, who is not afraid to make decisions and to purchase permanent things. that tie him to a place. It is sexy to decide to own big ticket items, and to show you are aiming to achieve something in life; that you are not just wandering around and grasping at whatever speaks to you in the moment. I was moved by her story about the dresses that did not fit. How ridiculous it was for a stylist to come so unprepared, and for her to feel ashamed by their irresponsibility. Mindy was the specific model for the day, for a photo shoot because she was voted one of the sexiest women, and yet the stylist had nothing for her but a shapeless navy blue shift. That stylist should be fired, they were not doing their job properly. When Mindy mentally said screw you and instead insisted "I want this dress and would feel uncomfortable in anything else", having them scramble to cut it up and fit it to her, I was thinking "Yes, you show them!" It was interesting to gain perspective into the writer's room of comedies. From Saturday Night Live to The Office, Mindy had some interesting stories. I cannot believe how many writers they have for a skit show, and somehow they still have some awful stuff making it on air. I could not imagine how it must have felt for Mindy, being new to the game but being surrounded by comedy legends (SNL) she admired. I would have been shocked into inaction (I have a fear of meeting famous people in public, gives me huge anxiety). Mindy, while being embarrassed about her writing and unsure of her place, still managed to stick it out. With The Office, some of the funniest episodes were written by Mindy. Her stories about brushing off work, or staying late into the evening trying to work a scene, were insightful. Spilling the beans on some of her costars was fun too. This book was funny, memorable, and full of what life as a female comedian is really like. Mindy will continue to be one of my favourite female comedians, who is continuously changing the framework of comedy to be more inclusive of gender, race, and body shape. I have already checked out What About Me? to read/listen to next and I cannot wait for her to crack me up once again.
