Wile Valek should technically be a father figure to Charlotte, his Lottie, his not aging and her mortality have shaped them in to something else. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their fates seem to be interwoven. Their love for each other is palpable on every page, all consuming and leading them into many a dangerous situation. Charlotte must trust Valek implicitly to survive, to prove that the others creatures perceptions and the propaganda being printed against the vampires is false, even when she must face the monster that awakens inside him at the scent of her blood. There were scenes that seemed repetitive, or that made Charlotte seem weak or frustrating, but they were few and far between. As well, I was frustrated with scenes involving Aiden and the Regime, but mostly because I detest his character and their beliefs (as the reader is meant to) and I wanted more of Valek and Charlotte. I was quite drawn to both the witches involved in the story, Evangeline and Sarah. Both were strong, independent, inquisitive, but forced into indenture by cruel men in order to survive. A fantastic start to the series; a fresh, new take on the vampire mythology, mixing fairies, imps, elves, witches, werewolves, vampires and more. I cannot wait for the next installment, Of Blood and Magic! I received this ebook from The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review.
