This is such a beautiful, whimsical story. It is about a young girl who yearns for independence, but does not realize the consequences of thinking of only herself. It is also about misunderstandings between two groups of people, and the ability of an outsider to shed new light on what both groups really want. Trot must learn to understand her Grandfather's illness and to actually take his care seriously. The Sirens and Serpents must understand to live together in harmony. The story is very simple, but so wonderfully told, and the illustrations are striking and memorable. Sky Island Review: Book 2 sees Trot finishing the school year, excited for summer and anxious to once again see her siren friends. Only, Princess Clia has not answered her letters. Finally, a letter arrives, but from the Serpent King, Anko. Her siren friend, Merla, is missing, snatched by a human boat, so they need Trot and Cap'n Bill's help. Grandpa is once again along for the ride, because he knows the former owner of the Island they need to go to (where the boat is from). Again, beautifully illustrated. The colouring and details are magical and transport you into the story. This time the story is about friendship, about needing to make time for those we care about most (even if we are busy) or we may lose them. It is also a story of greed and control. The new owner of Sky Island is selfish and wants to own all the wonders of the sea for himself, for his collection. Merla feels lost, alone, and unimportant; the owner of Sky Island preys on the weakness in her, making her feel powerful. This series is wonderful and I encourage people to read these books!
