Ella was naive most of the novel, but when it came to finding out the truth she was determined. I found her perspective fascinating, learning the colours of emotions and growing suspicious of certain colours as things became clearer. A well formed character, fully sympathetic, with many challenges to face. Although, I would have loved even more moments of revealing her synesthesia, as it was my favourite parts of the book. Ella's personality and creativity made lots of sense, because of her ability, and also made sense to why she would want to confine herself from the world and keep a small group of loved ones around. Interesting to experiencing her years of cataloging colours and association of colours with certain people, also how those colours affect her personally. Her synesthesia can also be a hindrance, if others learn how to fabricate emotions or remain completely neutral. Alec was also a well-formed character with several flaws, which both helped and hindered him. He could not stop himself when it came to Ella, which often leads to trouble and dire consequences. What he and Ella are put through is cringe-worthy and I was rooting for Ella to bust out of her comfort zone to confront the truth. Not a large cast of characters, which helped push the narrative forward, but also made it somewhat easy to workout the details of the crimes committed. I did enjoy the turn of events, but found it quite obvious. A light, easy read, with interesting plot points and characters. I was given a copy of this book by HarperCollins Canada in exchange for an honest review.
