She has to pull herself together in order to attend Olivia's brother's wedding. Hiding her drinking, her pain, her fear. Although, it becomes quite difficult when a very dark and twisted spirit begins tormenting her at the reception. In The Darkness Within, Peyton admits to her alcoholism and begins the hard road of recovery, with Olivia's help. Peyton also admits to Olivia her reasons for drinking and the two of them work together to find a way to help her. It begins, once again, with Peyton waking from a drunken blackout, an unknown man beside her. Regret written all over her, and disgust with herself, her home and her whole situation seeping out of her tired mind. So when she confides in Olivia, they fix up her life (the alcoholism and her untidy home), then they consult a psychic to work on her connection with the spirit world. These novellas paint a sad portrait of an alcoholics life. The novellas are vivid, sad, tortuously real. Every regret is palpable, but as a reader you understand Peyton's need to drown out these dark and horrifying voices. Both are quick reads, full of potential, with interesting characters and unique plots. I am continuously interested in finding out more about Peyton, how she came to see and hear ghosts, how she plans to fight the dark ones, what her future holds. There were a couple instances of repeated sentences and I found the love connection in The Leak of Madness rather quick, being more of a slow burn romance kind of girl, but I really found myself sucked into the stories. I received both these novellas from The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review.
