I loved the portrayal of the colour coded rooms in TMOTRD, clearly symbolic of the stages of life, with the last room being death (red/black) and filled with just the ever chiming clock to remind you of your eventual demise. This was well executed, coloured and imagined, with each room becoming more and more horrific. Each story ends shockingly, fearfully, leaving the reader to surmise the fate of the stories main character, or the after affects of their death. Where do souls go? Who is evil, or what? How does evil evade punishment or how is evil punished? Can a persons soul consume itself with hatred, fear, longing or guilt? While there were some stories I would have enjoyed more or less of, Katz did an excellent job illustrating the important themes and messages each poem/story is telling. The drawing perfectly accentuates Poe's vivid and dark imaginings of the world, of his mind. He is a hard author to do justice for, with many of his works laying subtle brick work and nuances, but Katz catches all that is hidden and reveals Poe's secrets to us. I can never resist anything Poe related and was thrilled to find this for $2.50 in the bargain section of Chapters. Worth every penny!
