I am not a fan of repetitive one-line poems, so I read the one line at the beginning and skipped along to the next poem. I know the repetition is meant to enforce the message, but for me poetry should be something that can easily be spoken in public, with deep impact. Repetitive poems lose their meaning when spoken allowed, at least they do for me. There were only a few of these though. My favourite poems were the introductory poems for each section. A little bit longer, but they meld to form a cohesive, beautiful tale of past women making the world a little better for future generations of women. I also loved the poems that encourage love and support between women. I believe from a young age women are taught to be the hardest judges on their own sex. Through media, friends, men, families, they are told how women should behave and how to treat women who behave "incorrectly." This book urges women to change their perspective, to break those claustrophobic molds. When women realize that they are being taught to hate or belittle each other they can shift their perspective, because when we all come together as one strong voice, well, that is when we make the most progress. I highly recommend this book to everyone, EVERYONE! Women, men, non-binary individuals. This book reaches into the heart of the history of women, into what needs to be heard in order for a better future. Women are used, abused, discarded. Witch trials still occur in certain parts of the world. Women are still afraid to be outside in the dark, afraid to be blamed if something happens to them, afraid of a system that tends to allow abusers, rapists, etc. to walk free or face minimal charges, afraid of who they are or who they want to be. There is always this need to fit into how the world views women, often at the cost of being true to oneself. This poetry touches on all of that, allows you to embrace that little part of yourself that you hide away, that you know is hidden in others. It takes the reader through a tumult of emotions, pushes to be heard, to beg questions to be asked. This book of poetry is meant to ignite your soul.
