The plot twists, dips, falls back on itself, and continues to make the reader question each characters motives. Who can we trust, as we suspect that even Hawthorne has some nefarious past that lead to his departure from the police to become a private detective. Very few characters are likable; however, Anthony is funny, charismatic and relatable. I enjoyed his rapport with Hawthorne and felt he was justified when he was able to help, in his own round-about way. It was also interesting to receive a glimpse behind-the-curtain of a writer/scriptwriters life. What goes on in the publishing, television and movie universes that the public is blissfully unaware of. I was able to figure out the ending mid-way through the book, but this did not take away from the world building, depth of character, and intense plot which kept me enticed until the very last page. I am a fan of Horowitz's unusual narratives and look forward to reading more of his strange crime novels in the future! I was given a copy of this book by HarperCollins Canada in exchange for an honest review.
