This past weekend my husband and I stayed around Waterloo, and we had a fantastic time! Friday night we spent around home; we took the little one to the park near our place for some swinging time. She loved it, especially when mommy started swinging beside her. The sun was setting and we were moving back and forth together, smiling and laughing at one another, a moment I will not soon forget.
After, we went to check out KW LatinFest, presented by Neruda Arts. This Festival was so fun, it may have been the best we've been to yet this year. We were treated to some great Latin music as we arrived, already I was feeling the rhythm of the event. I had a henna tattoo done on my hand, while my husband and daughter danced around to the music. When my design was done, we went to sign up with One Match; a branch of the blood donor program that looks for matches that you could donate bone marrow or stem cells to. All we had to do was a couple mouth swabs. At first we were a bit nervous about the extraction hurting, but the guy we signed up with assured us it does not hurt to have the marrow taken from you the way they do it; unfortunately, it is painful to receive it. It felt nice being able to offer our information in case we are able to save a life, we both already donate blood (even though, right now I have to wait until I stop breastfeeding before I can go again). We then walked around, while listening to the wonderful music. Our littlest one watched all the other kids and smiled the whole time we were there, showing everyone anything she was holding. We enjoyed the sights of food trucks, it was about time they were included in the Festivals in Waterloo, plus food stalls and a little bit of a market to walk through. I was very tempted by one of the alpaca sweaters, but just couldn't bring myself to buy something so warm on such a blistering hot day. We had to make sure our baby was covered from head to toe in sunscreen, but somehow forgot to cover ourselves, I am now sporting a little bit of a burn/tan.
The only thing I did not like about the Festival occurred as we were leaving, around 8 pm. The DJ on the smaller stage called up two women for a dancing contest, in which he asked them to shake their booties. One of them impressed the DJ so much he asked that her boyfriend come on stage to join her, and for him to dance with her. Then the two of them went about grinding on stage, in front of a five year old in the front row, and to the cheers of the audience. It bothers me so much that breastfeeding mother's are shamed for feeding their babies in public, while this couple can perform a dance that replicates sex and be applauded. What is our world coming to? When did it become OK for sex to be staged, when mother's feel they need to be cloistered, so as not to bother everyone else with the natural act of feeding their child? I am still embarrassed to feed our baby in public, even with a cover, for fear someone will come up to me and tell me they are offended and I am being inappropriate. If not for that one incident, I would have loved the Festival to pieces, but that put me off at the end. Sunday morning, while my husband attended church, I took the little one to Waterloo Park for an early morning picnic. She enjoyed herself, watching the cricket match and climbing all over mama. Then Daddy returned and we took a little stroll around the park, where we got to see four little peacock babies (all of them came over to greet our little baby). We met a couple of our really good friends for brunch at The Duke, which I recommend as it is quite tasty and the atrium is a great place to eat; you feel like you are outside, but not with all the oppressive heat. It was nice to relax and not to have to cook, while having quality time with good people.
Lying on the grass, as the sun set, while the big band played their notes, felt like the music was floating lazily on the stiff summer breeze, as the heat of the evening sun trickled down our necks and we could feel the ever present thrumming of the drum, or maybe it was our hearts... I love outdoor concerts, and it always surprises me that more people don't attend, that there is more of an audience for outdoor films than for this amazing performance this band presented to us. (Don't get me wrong, I also love outdoor films).
A great weekend for sure, and after putting the babe to bed my hubby and I cuddled on the couch for some quality couple time, in the quiet with the lights out (so as not to wake the sleeping giant)...I want to make sure that we set aside a few hours a week to be just the two of us again, so we remember to always be in love, as goofy as that sounds, it's important.
