I wanted everything I did to be perfect, as I tend to over analyze everything I do, and often do not think it comes out as intended or looks good enough for events. So, I tried 100% to make everything even better. I have lots of mason/jam jars and I thought to add a touch of colour to the food table by dipping three of them in paint (I went with pastel colours to match our tea theme and the invitations). I then picked flowers from my garden to put in the coloured jars; lilies, hydrangeas, sweet pea blossoms, and daisies. For the favours, I went with three packs of tea (each holding 20 bags). A fruit sampler, an herbal sampler and Earl grey, as a staple black tea. I designed the tea bags, cut them out, put them around the each flavour, taped the sides and stapled the top. Took an evening to do, but these were the items I made which I thought turned out the best, even if the purple looked more dark blue than intended. The three scone flavours I went with were: sweet potato and apple biscuits from this recipe (I used baby food previously made, with apple added), cranberry, and rhubarb (from our garden). To add to the tea, I made Devonshire cream from this recipe, and bought wildberry jam and honey to put in nice containers. The honey was more for the sweet potato and apple biscuits, as a drizzle. I had originally thought to put the favours in mason jars, but they did not fit. So I folded down some brown paper bags and put on labels, which I designed to match the invitations and tea bags. When making the sandwiches, I wanted to have each one a bit different, according to high tea standards. I made wonton wrapper baskets and my own tuna recipe (3 cans of tuna, 1 whole avocado mashed, 1/2 cup of feta cheese, 1/4 cup of light mayo, 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt, 1/4 cup green onions). I then made cucumber and cream cheese triangle sandwiches using this recipe (the high tea usual suspect). Finally, I made ham and Swiss cheese pinwheels, some with pickles, some without (all with honey mustard). I used a base recipe, then added to it. My mother-in-law was in charge of the cake and desserts. She brought a delicious tray of treats, which I unfortunately did not get a photograph of. The cake was spot on, we asked her to find a cake with a soccer theme (as the bride-to-be is a soccer fanatic). Needless to say, she loved the cake, which came complete with a lego soccer player and the saying "The Game is On!" It was a nice touch, and perfect with tea or coffee.
My final task was to come up with a prize for one of the "games" planned for that day. We had put on the invitation that everyone was to wear an outlandish hat (a great way to have people wear hats, since the event was in a sunny backyard). I put together a bath time gift basket, topped with a label saying "Hats of to you! You've Won!" Inside was a lavender bath bomb, mint and olive hand cream, fancy soap, lavender body butter, a cherry pie candle, lavender Epsom salts and lemon balm picked from my garden. My other sister-in-law was in charge of games (as well as the veg tray, fruit tray and delicious dip). She put together three great games with fantastic prizes. The first got us all introducing ourselves, and then guessing the celebrity we had in an envelope (large heads on small tuxedo bodies), whoever found the groom won the prize. My little nephew won and received a soccer ball, which he was over the moon about. The next game was a "what's in your purse" game, with the winner having tons of items in her purse (there was a prize tub with tons of tea themed items to pick from). The final game was an under/over based on the bride, I managed to get second place and won a beautiful mug. Felt bad about winning, since I was one of the hosts, but was told to take a prize (even after I said it should go to someone else). Oh well, enjoyed a wonderful snickerdoodle coffee out of my watercolour flower mug today...so, no regrets. The shower went well, and the bride enjoyed herself. Although, it was quite a lot of work, and I am glad it is over, I was happy to see people enjoying what me and my sister-in-laws were able to put together. Perfection is hard to achieve, especially for an introverted planner like myself, but I think we came darn close with this one, and I think we can all be proud of ourselves.
