Thursday in Stratford
This iteration was set in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, 1936 - 1939. The set was sparse, but they were able to use it in such a way that it felt full (without having to add or remove anything). The costumes were spectacular. At one point they had a large Papier-mâché puppet that sat atop an actors shoulders; impressive. The actors were fantastic, and the story was intense. De Flores was terrifying, but captivating. Sitting in the front you can see the spit as they give their impassioned speeches, the intensity of each sordid embrace, the horror of each thoughtless murder. "A woman hires a hit man to murder her fiancé, only to become trapped in a web of lust and deceit. All the suspense of a film noir thriller, in a drama by contemporaries of Shakespeare." - Straford Festival. Middleton was not very liked in his era, as his plays were thought to be too vulgar and gory, and watching this play you can see why. Perfect for this generation, and relevant to today.
Asparagus & Carrot Salad: red peppers, spicy coconut milk vinaigrette, curried peanuts, and cilantro. This dish was so refreshing and amazing. Included radishes, which was a nice touch. The sauce was light, but had a creamy taste.
Salmon & Tuna Poke "Nacho": crispy wontons, sweet and spicy dressing, aioli, peanuts, cilantro, and scallion. These were wow! You only get four, but they are huge; the flavour is intense. The aioli blends well with the pickled red onion. The tuna and salmon are fresh, and the taste comes out well with the scallions and the sweet and spicy dressing. They are filling, and rich, we needed a long walk after these bad boys. Friday in Stratford
After lunch we took a walk through Stratford, where we happened upon a cupcake place (Kandy Cakes), which had a sign with a very tempting offer for a Unicorn Cupcake (my kryptonite it seems, anything Unicorn, or mythical). We went in, and they were out, but the proprietor said she could make some on the spot (as they were finished cooling from the oven). So, I had to buy at least one for me, and a bunch of adorable mini cupcakes to take home to the hubby and kids. Highly recommend stopping in if you are in the area, she is super friendly, and her cupcakes are just deliciously, sinfully, amazing. Also, bought my husband a growler of Black Swan Brewing Co. Porter, he enjoyed it thoroughly.
