For my daughter's birthday I wanted to make sugar cookies; so, of course, I needed to try out a recipe and try my hand at design before I went all out for her. To see if I could even do it. I went on Pinterest, humanity's best friend for finding info quick, and found an awesome recipe on the blog Sweetopia and instruction manual on how to ice/make icing. I decided to make some cookies for a pool party my younger sister was hosting at her new place. So both a hostess/new home gift. Turned out good, not as professional as I was hoping, but everyone seemed to find them fun and the cookies tasted great. The little one's enjoyed their specialized cookies. Used food colouring markers for drawing on the cookies. It was as difficult as you would imagine it would be, took about a full day to do it all. Which is probably because this was my first time. You have to make the dough, set it for an hour in the fridge, then cut out the shapes, another 10 mins - an hour in the fridge to set, cook in the oven for 15 mins (each set). Once room temperature, pipe the icing around the edges (using a size 1 or 3 piping tip), let that dry for at least 10 minutes (recommend more), then using a bigger piping tip (size 5) and a little more water in your royal icing, do the filling. Use a toothpick, or kebab stick in my case, and push the filling to the edges and pop all bubbles. Let sit overnight if possible, then do design with pens...or more icing, depending on your desire. I got a little impatient, so some of my colours broke the icing a bit, but the colour covered the mistakes. This lead to my decision of an easier design for the adults at my babe's birthday and fancier for the kids to take in their loot bags.
