When staying at a cottage my one and only plan is to read lots; by the water, on the beach, on the cottage sofa, before bed (the first time I went to Stan's Cottages I read an over 500 page novel about Robin Hood and Maid Marian, entitled Lady of the Forest). I was a teenager and really into fantasy novels that included romance; I know what you're thinking, nerd!!!! (I was, and proud of it, still am most of the time). After having a child your priorities shift a bit, not necessarily because you want them to, but because you have a few other things on your mind; including keeping tabs on a baby who has become an expert crawler and has decided to go from standing to sitting in a flash to get where and to what she wants. So instead, this cottage trip consisted of keeping an eye on the babe, reading when I could, and deciding what photograph needed to be taken at what moment with the new addition to our little family unit. It was EXHAUSTING!
Since we are up so early in the mornings the days become long, which is nice, but you begin to think too long for staying in one place all day. So every now and then we packed ourselves into the car and took ourselves off on a mini adventure for the day. After my sister and her husband departed on the Monday we spent the rest of that day making do at the cottage, but the next day we wanted to branch out to the area around. My mom is a big fan of Madonna House, near Combermere. It is a nice place, with a great gift shop and little museums around. We went into the shop and were very tempted by both the huge collection of buttons, all different shapes, sizes, colour and type and a windmill music box/lamp. It was such a unique find, and if we had a little boy I think I would have snatched it up right then. We already have an adorable musical figure of a cat tickling her baby from the babe's Grauntie, who was with us on the trip. I just couldn't justify the expense, maybe it will still be there if we go back and we have a little boy with us... Walking around the area was fun, for Nora as well. We went into the little museum they had, with items ranging from cloth books, old dolls, and farm equipment to a player piano. We were even treated to a show of the player piano, listening to some old tunes, such as The Maple Leaf Forever (perfect for the week). The babe loved it and watched as the piano keys pushed themselves around. We were given an explanation of how the piano works, the holes in the paper causes air to flow through the valves and this moves the keys (or something of that nature). It was amazing to see.
After our little adventure we went to enjoy lunch at a local chip wagon in Barry's Bay, called Polka Spuds. My aunt treated us to a delicious poutine, and my husband got the two of us some zucchini sticks (my new favourite junk food). The rest of our day was spent enjoying the cottage once again. What I might remember most about those days at the cottage are my mom trying to teach the babe how to walk on her feet and my husband asking specifically for a photo of him and our daughter sitting on the end of the dock looking out at the water (his reason: because he loves Peanuts and there is an iconic shot of Charlie sitting with Snoopy like this).
So, while I didn't read an entire book while there, and had a hard time even getting through the book I did bring, I had more fun than I have ever had at the cottage. I will remember this vacation for years to come, especially the company.
