What a whirlwind book, so intricately plotted and told so aptly. I loved the formatting for the book and for the audiobook. The full cast, the sounds and details, I was blown away. This story is very reminiscent to the case of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed (the case having become most widely known through the podcast Serial). A popular girl is murdered and the first, and apparently only, suspect is her boyfriend, Sal. The police fail all around to do any proper police work, simply latching on to Sal and investigating in no other way, searching no other avenues. The evidence is spotty, the interviews strange and questionable. For a high school senior to stumble onto more clues than the police force is indicative of how this case was handled so poorly. I was so angry for Sal throughout this book. For the lack of any kind of care he received. He was guilty without real evidence and the town then decided to ostracize his family. Not to mention the blatant racism from a local reporter. Ew! And even as Pip found stuff that maybe pointed at Sal, it seemed more and more likely he was the real victim of a system that treats some more unfairly than others. All along he was the villain, with no one truly looking at Andie (because she is the popular, white girl). This story had me gripped. Pip is dogged, determined, she is not so easily scared off. She puts herself on the line in order to prove something she believes in whole heartedly. She risks her own safety. She is smart, but sometimes so carelessly dumb. I feared for her on several occasions. When she walks into situations that are so obviously dangerous, no heeding to how she could end up dead. It baffled me several times. A great book, with wonderful character growth. Sometimes predictable, but ultimately indicative of our justice system. The relationship that forms between Pip and Ravi was beautiful. Two souls so sure of something and working together, growing together, learning together, all while slowly falling in love with each other.
