The novel focused on the everyday, but it was interspersed with magic and extraordinary events. The real magic, though, was not the weather phenomenon, or the communication with animals and insects, but the human connections. From Weylyn touching lives, to his story affecting irreversible change to the lives of those around him. A powerful message about the impact one person can have on any one person, no matter how short their time with the person may have been. My favourite interactions involved Mary and Lydia. These two women are not only affected by Weylyn, his quiet strength and unshaking honesty, but they also change him. They replaced a loneliness in him he did not realize existed. We sometimes take for granted family and forget how silent and lonely life can be without a home or foundation to rely on. These two women begin building a shelter for the wanderer Weylyn has become. They do not try to tame or cage him, they welcome him and understand enough about his nature to let him remove himself from civilization when his wolfish nature urges. My favourite scene involved the harvesting of firefly light (magical). Again, an elegant book about love, friendship and human connection. It is a search for meaning in life, purpose, our reason for being. A look at who we are, why we are the way we are, our humanity. It is nature vs. nurture, urges vs. repression, about learning and growing. It is about accepting truths and being honest with ourselves. It is about sacrifice and about allowing ourselves to be selfish. Weylyn's long journey is mostly about him forgiving himself for his past and accepting what he wants for the future. Accepting that he cannot control everything, he must push past his fear and find a home, happiness, and an end to his lonely travels. Even if home is less a place and more another person.
