Lara returns in this third installation (having helped Cass in Edinburgh) and is helping Cass search for answers about the skull ghoul and looking for The Society of the Black Cat. I also loved how the Veil in New Orleans was overlapping from all of the ghosts that exist throughout the history of New Orleans. This added depth to the story, making it more difficult for Cassidy to move throughout and made the book more in tune with a place so steeped in the culture of the past and the vibrancy of the present. The main focus of this book was friendship, specifically how far you are willing to go to protect the ones you love. Cass is stalwart in keeping Jacob with her, even as his powers are increasing. She refuses to believe he could ever hurt her and cannot bring herself to send him on. Lara wants her to release him, but she also recognizes this deep bond Cass and Jacob share and she respects it and loves Cass enough to help her hold on to him. The addition of a secret society was a nice touch and helped to move the plot along. I liked that the girls were able to meet others like them and find help where they are usually on their own. I also like that ghosts exist within the society, specifically former members. So, while there were moments that are sure to make you shiver in fear, there are also moments of humor and levity. A combination that makes these novels so accessible to everyone. I recommend checking out this series if you enjoy spooky stories!
