This graphic novel is stunningly gorgeous and the story is haunting. The colours are subdued at times and vibrant at others. As you follow this young woman from soft, comforting greens, to dark foreboding blacks and reds. The illustrations are whimsical, but then starkly realistic. Blending perfectly a fantasy novel with a story that tackles what it means to face death. It is a book about human endurance, love, acceptance, and the inevitability of mortality. It is a graphic novel of opposites. Our desire to live, but also our apparent need to chase death and try to defeat it. It is about light and darkness, those two at war constantly in our hearts. The whimsy of the forest creatures contrasts with the scary nature of the dark forces. Mermaids are beautiful, but deadly. Three women warriors are after our hero; but why, who are they, and who is this young woman they are chasing? The three women remind one of the fates, those three ancient women who hold our life strings and know our stories, our births, our ends. This graphic novel surprised me, turning me completely around. It is not often you can be suprised or moved by this medium. But, this story is strikingly dark at moments and beautifully soft in the next. It pulls at your emotions, from wonder, to happiness, fear to acceptance, and finally that feeling of peace. I would never have thought to write a story like this in the way these authors did, but now I see it was so honest and open and such a creative way to tell something so tragic. If you enjoy fantasy and graphic novels I highly encourage reading this gem of a book. It is a bigger format, but necessary for the powerful images that will capture your eye and your imagination while telling a beautiful story.
