It was interesting to compare this romcom to that young adult science fiction novel I read. The YA novel has the protagonist experience many iterations of his life before leaping him back, always when he fails to save the life of his girlfriend. Whereas, in this novel, the time travel only really occurs during the first half of the novel, before the lead ends up in the timeline that will stick. In this novel I was expecting a bit more time travel than we actually got, as most of the novel is spent in the fourth time hop of Christmas. So, Mae did not have to go through too much before she was able to realize and achieve her happily-ever-after. Funnily enough, Mae ends up sticking to the timeline where she arrives at the cabin and behaves like a maniac, or cruel person, at the beginning of the holiday. Which we understand where she is coming from with her sass and attitude, because we too have been stuck in the time loop with her, but her family has no idea what is going on or why Mae is acting the way she is. So, it's funny there is not more apologizing from her for her behaviour, or that the family kind of just accepts this form of Mae when he personality has always been so absolutely opposite. I did love Mae's character growth, her finally letting go of her need to please everyone, breaking from following tradition, and to finally allow herself to follow her heart. One of the reasons, well the main reason, she could do this is because she thought it would make no difference (that she would just rewind again). So, she loses her inhibitions, loosens her hold on the holidays, and is honest with those around her, especially Andrew. I liked the relationship between Mae and Andrew, their connection. But, for some reason, I was thinking this novel was going to take a different direction than they went, because often times crushes do not translate well into realistic relationships. But, their bond was so beautiful, with humour, sadness, honesty, friendship, and then love. Mae needed to confront her own insecurities to finally realize that chasing her dreams and change is actually a good thing and that family, true family, will stick by you and support you no matter what happens. A cute, light, fun and daring Christmas romcom, full of all the Christmas cheer you can chug. Favourite moment was Mae and Andrew lying under the Christmas tree and chatting. Honestly, that is one of my go-to things to do since I was a child. The smell is so calming, and I love to read there.
