At first, I thought the karmic ability bestowed on Prudence was pointless to the story, but it actually made her character growth stronger. It is through this power that she begins to see her own snap judgements, that she does not see the grand picture before doling out karmic justice (does not consider the consequences). She realizes she has a power that she is not using correctly, that she should be trying to learn more about those around her and their actions, before deciding for herself whether they deserve criticism or praise. There was a lot of learning in this novel, about sea life, responsibility, trust, and determination. This is another YA novel where the adults seem inept. Prudence's teacher knew the whole year that Quint had other responsibilities and was giving him extra credit, but made no effort to notify Prudence of the reason for Quint's absences (even though it would also effect her work and grade) or offer her a chance for extra credit. Prudence's parents are hiding stuff from their children and seem to be oblivious to the problems Prudence is going through throughout the year and the summer. Quint's mom accuses Prudence of a serious crime with no evidence, then proceeds to inform all of the other volunteers where Prudence works of what she had supposedly done (after firing her without proof). Some of those volunteers could have been classmates or friends, that is defamation of character and disgusting to think about. An adult should know better. Quint and Prudence were adorable, their hostility clearly leaning toward something else. Quint is calm and caring, although it would have been nice if he gave Prudence a bit more slack. He was quick to ridicule her for judging him, but had a hard time himself understanding her obvious perfectionist personality (probable OCD tendencies and anxiety). But, they did bring the best out in each other and truly cared for those they love. I think Prudence should not have forgiven Quint so easily, but I suppose with her growth she learned to see the good in others and herself and to let go of her misgivings and her mistrust. The audiobook was well done, adding a lot of emotion and depth. TW: animal cruelty, hurt animals, theft, anxiety, accidental injury, false accusations of theft
