Once again Maggie's writing is lyrical, it is addictive, it is so vivid you feel as though you are right there with Ronan and Hennessey as they dream the impossible into reality. The two of them seem as though they are on an inevitable collision course with the moderators. They listen as Bryde tries to impart wisdom about how ley lines work, the importance of dreamers, the encroachment of humanity and how it is slowly destroying the world and the dreamers/their dreams. The use of art in these books is so unique. That artwork is a powerful item that can keep dreamed items 'awake'. But, not all artwork can do this, there is a particular reason why certain items created can be made to keep dreams awake (some emotion the artist/creator places within the piece). I like that Jordan and Declan are working on finding a way to replicate the item, these two are so good together. They fear for their family, but yearn for their own freedom as well. Ronan is becoming more and more erratic as the book progresses. He becomes more and more frustrated by Bryde's questions and cryptic observations. As they drive from one place in America to the next he takes in the history, but anger is sitting beneath his skin. He has a need to do more, find out more, confront the enemy. He is a dangerous weapon and Bryde knows it. Hennessey is hoping to do something, to learn something, to escape her recurring nightmare of the lace. She has abandoned Jordan in the hopes of learning who she is without all her copies. This series is a powerhouse of familial bonds, the strength of dreams, the horribly reality of humanity destroying the natural world (to the point of no return). The book really makes you question growth, but also the power and beauty of art, and the right to correct past wrongs with more violence. Greywaren Review: Dreams are now sleeping, because of what Hennessey was able to do within the dream realm. Only one dream remains fully awake, Jordan, and neither her nor Declan can figure out why. Ronan is missing and Bryde himself has fallen asleep. Matthew knows the truth about what he is and the world still seems to be on course for utter destruction. Carmen Farooq-Lane, Hennessey, and the last visionary are trying to figure out what to do next and what has happened to the moderators. Something doesn't feel right, who is truly the bad guy here and who are the heroes? What an incredible end to such a phenomenal world. This book was able to capture the essence of the Lynch family. Their wild Irish roots, their need for more, for family, for freedom and love. They are tied together by a bond of family, while also realizing that family can be something that both helps you grow and that holds you back. Declan has always done what is expected of him, for his brothers, without thought to his own dreams and desires. Ronan has always rebelled, knowing that he is different, that he does not fit in, that he is trapped by the powers he holds. Matthew is carefree, innocent, but he too is learning that families hold secrets thinking they are helping when they are really taking from you the chance to know who you truly are. Farooq-Lane and Hennessey have a lot of growth throughout the book. Carmen needs to question her blind loyalty to the moderators, her willingness to follow what she believes to be wrong, her inability to remove the memory of who her brother was from who the other dreamers are. Hennessey must learn who she is without her "sisters", without her other half Jordan, without the lace and dreaming. If she needs to, can she accept all that back, be selfless and accept her power, fight the lace, and win? Then there is the heart of this series, Ronan. His history, his family, his truth. Is he truly human, is humanity simply the emotions we feel towards others, the connections we foster and encourage to flourish. While Ronan may be something both dream and human, he must come to terms with whether he wants to inhabit a world that can be so cruel to those who are different, a world so willing to crush diversity instead of seeing the strength of it. But it is through his relationships with his brothers, with Hennessey, with his friends, with Adam that he realizes sometimes the good can burn away the bad.
