Hazel is smart and kind, but also prone to following Daisy's whims, no matter how dangerous they may be. Hazel wants so desperately to fit in and Daisy is the quintessential British girl (although she is hiding many secrets of her own). Both became friends when they confront each other on their duplicity to blend in with the other girls at their boarding school, Deepdean. The case is anything but simple, with many twists and turns that somewhat fooled me. I was pulled in and constantly intrigued by where this narrative was leading. Hazel and Daisy have a good way of working together, although at times Daisy's ego would get in the way of their investigation. I also liked when the police finally become involved in the case and Daisy and Hazel's views on them. Specifically, Hazel standing up to Daisy to put their safety first, instead of their egos. There is quite a bit of racism towards Hazel, which goes unaddressed by her or her peers and had me quite angry on her behalf. She simply puts up with it or uses it to her advantage. I hope in future she is able to push back against those who are awful towards her. Daisy was unlikable at first, but I believe is is because she is fashioned after Sherlock Holmes. She is egotistical, smart, pushy and quick to be annoyed by others. She often treats Hazel as inferior and calls her dumb on several occasions. It is only when she apologizes and begins to see her own faults that I began to like her a little better. Hazel is much more empathetic, kind, smart and observant. She cares about everyone involved and sees the impact the case has on others. She does not rule anyone out based on her liking them, especially if they were clearly in the area of the body. The setting was chosen well for the mystery plot. A girls British boarding school, in the past, when all these little misses are being taught to be ladylike. The death of a teacher that was not much liked, a controversy involving the love lives of two teachers and a new male teacher. There is drama galore and gossip runs rampant. Which makes it all the easier for Daisy, who has adoring younger ladies following her every desire, to gather evidence. Also, Hazel is terrified of possible ghosts of those who have died mysteriously on the grounds. All of this makes this book such a great fall read! A wonderful start to a fun detective duo, I am excited for book #2.
