The novel starts off with Jack an some impossible situation, trying desperately to save his girlfriend for the dozenth or so time, only to quickly transition into the beginning of all this love business. Jack is very likable from the beginning, he is funny, he is self deprecating, and he is honest. He is loyal and he cares deeply for those in his inner circle. Kate is wonderful as well, she hides herself from those around her, until she feels a connection. She is deep, loving, but scared as well. Kate and Jack are so in sync from the moment they meet. She matches his sarcasm with her wit, and both are absolutely the corniest. But you cannot help but love them, their connection, their immediate spark. Every time jump brings Jack back and every time these two are magnetic, are unable to stop the pull of fate or whatever is going on. You root for them, even as Jack continues to make the wrong decisions over and over again. You want to yell at him, to urge him to be truthful, to try something else, to tell someone what is going on and have someone in his corner. But, he is so set on believing that telling the truth would not help the situation, and that he has to hide everything from those who love him most. Jack, for his part, seems to take the time travel business in good faith. He hardly freaks out and almost immediately makes a plan to save Kate. Each time he fails he readjusts his strategy. He has moments you think he will win, but fails, and moments when you hate the decisions he makes. If he were a little more honest with his family and friends I think things would have been easier on him, as his keeping quiet leads to more chaos and heartbreak. When he finally is open and asks for help, the results turn out much better. This book was a tad slow at parts and there were moments when I was quite annoyed with those in Jack's family and friend circle, but in the end it all made sense and pushed the idea that having a relationship with someone should not mean less of a relationship with others in your life. As well, there is this idea that when you are in a relationship it is a closed unit, when in truth it should be open to others, like family and friends, who can help ease pain, help find answers, or just be a shoulder when you need it. The book was a little too open ended in some instances, in terms of the time travel and Jack, but I did enjoy how he amassed all of his journeys into four main imaginings of his failures and triumph. The end was rushed, but you had been through so much that you could piece together sort of the highlights of how it would have gone. This book was heart breaking, moving, and a really interesting take on love and time travel. I highly recommend for an emotionally lovely read.
