A very stunning graphic novel that is beautifully illustrated and coloured. The colouring perfectly empasizes the story. The picturesque oranges mimic the essence of fall when the graphic novel is talking about the Samhain Festival. The eerie purples, pinks and greens are bold and vibrant when casting magic to locate their lost friend. The blues are haunting and ethereal when the ghosts appear. Red is used to emphasize the fear, while black the darkness. There is something evil lurking on the edges of the school, secrets to be revealed (long hidden and festering). I really loved Abigail and her friends, especially her commitment to finding Noreen. She knows something is wrong and wishes only to do all she can, finding resistance to her help at every turn. Goldie is responsible and wants to help Abby, but not at the expense of their own safety and school standing. Enver is a devoted friend, but they worry about Abby's health and her mistrust of the school. Violet is hard, is confident, is mean to Abby (as her roommate), but she is hiding her own insecurities. I did wish that there had been more about the backstory, about what had happened. I felt some things were a bit rushed, not enough exposition. I would have liked more story, more depth, more time with Abby and her friends. I could easily connect to Abby, but felt her friends were not fleshed out enough and their reasoning for not believing her was kind of contradictory to how their friendship group seemed to function. If there had been more about Abby being flaky, making things up, being untrustworthy, then yes. But, as it was, her friends should have trusted her instincts and what she had been seeing. I liked the messages about friendship that this book was instilling. That friendship is about trust and love and acceptance. Abby's friend group is mirroring one of the past, in which a group sort of stifled each other instead of trying to understand or even help. In the case of the group in the past, it was more of a friendship at a cost scenario, in which one friend wanting to do something for herself meant she was hurting the group. Real friendship should mean supporting someone who wants to know more about who they are and their past. Real friendship is being able to say goodbye to a friend, knowing you will see them again and their love is real, instead of grasping on to them and holding on too tightly. I am interested to see more from this incredible world and there were some hints at the end of more to come.
