Charlie Adhara really knows how to weave a tale. This book was captivating, full of twists and turns, a few shocks, and the perfect amount of romance. Julien and Eli are at odds with each other, but both want the truth of what has been happening in Maudit Falls. This means a begrudging partnership, fraught with chemistry, attraction, and slow burn perfection. Even better that Julien has never explored his sexuality until now, because of his career. Eli is a very interesting character. He is an outsider even in the werewolf community. He can do things other wolves cannot, so he lives in fear of humans and wolves alike. He has a difficult time trusting, so him letting down some of his guard with Julien is meaningful. But, does Julien deserve his trust and respect? Julien's character is so broken by his brother's death. He does not know what to do, is untethered and cut off from work. He seems clueless, trusting, hopeful. But, he also seems to know more than he lets on, is hiding more than he reveals to the reader. I really appreciated the small deceptions and unreliable narration from him. Seemingly so naive and innocent, until he is not. The story was also intriguing. How the werewolf community operates, the overall Governing body, but then also the factions and their territories. That some wolves are lost or packless and therefore easy targets for bad groups, for terrible wolves/people. That Eli is working for Charlie Adhara's two other characters, from the Big Bad Wolf series, in order to help those lost wolves to find pack, meaning, and safety. The mystery that Julien's brother was working on helped push the plot along, kept Julien digging and questioning all that was around him, leading him into dangerous situations, but also uncovering plots meant to hurt and to destroy. A really great start to a book series, in which the two leads fall for each other, only to lose that trust. Now where will they go, how will they move past betrayal to find love again? Is there a chance they could trust each other enough to make a sanctuary for themselves from the cruel world? Can two broken men mend themselves together?
