This is a post-apocalyptic mind bender. The fierce heroine must face impossible odds, the rich, old Gods and the strength in herself in order to find the hope she so desperately needs. It is a graphic novel about greed, the power of faith and the force of love. Each issue changes your viewpoint on characters and you continuously root for En, even while she makes mistake after mistake. Her optimism is overwhelming, she finds beauty in even her darkest moments. Her conviction about right and wrong is perfect and I love her insistence that the best way to live is to enjoy the little things. Those small moments we usually pass by or over for bigger, brighter moments. Strong points about living in the now, about how taking pills is just a way to kid yourself and hide from the truth. The colouring was fantastic. Bright, beautiful colours when En feels hope and dark reds and black when she feels darkness and sadness. The wastelands shine like diamonds, so bright, that you can feel the hope emitting off them and understand why En feels there must be more than just the world she is trapped in. I am excited to see the next volume and listen to the next album. The music was so atmospheric. Futuristic, mixed with melodic tones and a bit of pop. The lyrics mixing beautifully with the art of the graphic novel, some of the actual words from the song are strung throughout the section that song connects with. This made for a truly unique reading experience, I felt pulled in to the world of En.
