This was a very interesting take on mean girls and feminist revenge. The girls perpetuate the ideal teenage girl image (tiny waist, high end clothes, makeup, meanness). But, they use these feminine wiles to lure perverted and dangerous boys to their deaths. So, while they are protecting women from awful men, they are still in a cycle of the male gaze and patriarchal societal standards. It is both suffocating and infuriating. But this is also a graphic novel about how popularity can consume and distort a person into a monster, to the point where the popular person no longer recognizes themselves. Things start to unravel as tensions rise between pack leader Arianna and Amanda, both of whom were changed at the same time. Amanda questions Arianna's leadership, as Arianna begins to break some of their rules (she has a boyfriend who fits all the criteria for the type of boy they hunt, she starts killing boys who are not bad). Meanwhile, Becca is becoming closer to Marley, their connection and friendship blooming into something more. Becca loves her pack, but is beginning to wonder if what they are going is actually winning back power or just being as awful, or worse, than the boys they hunt. The art and aesthetics of this graphic novel are stunning. Th colour palette reminds me of 90s teen movies, all bright and bubbly, with an underlying darkness. There is a perfect pairing of rose coloured good times and dark and bloody bad times. It was an interesting, and dominating, choice to have pink bleed slowly into red as Becca shifts into a werewolf and things begin to fall apart, then fade back into pink as her and Marley must make the choice about what it really means to be a pack. Highly recommend if you are interested in a good kick-ass, feminist, horror graphic novel (some gore, but not too over the top). The story is simple to follow, but each of the characters is fleshed out and by the end the story is emotionally raw and powerful. Really presenting sisterhood, power dynamics, and friendship.
