This book was very atmospheric and the connection to both deaths was handled interestingly. To be honest, there was maybe too much going on with the death of the school girl and the death of Fiona's sister. Although, I did enjoy the premise of a victim's sister trying to find closure for another young girl's death. The ghost element was spooky, but also sad. These poor girls roaming around as spirits, unsettled, trapped at the site of their demise. The book just felt like a reminder that this world is very unkind to women. Especially unwanted women, young girls without family ties, or women who can cause trouble for men with connections and power. It was well written and I was immediately drawn in to both timelines, even if I felt they might have worked better as separate books. I empathised with these young women, so easily discarded, and I was so angry for them. With their inability to do anything to stop what felt like a punishment for simply living. However, this was also a book about strength, about fighting back and finding answers. While the world refused to fight for them, or care, they cared for and spoke for each other. Even the ghost, Mary Hand, was speaking for the dead, for the fears that these girls buried inside, hid from. The ghost confronts you with hidden pain, dark secrets, your own horribleness, or a scene that scares you from your life. You must confront yourself, and in that moment of fear Mary tries to come inside. Fiona was a really well developed character. She is so stuck in her sister's death and the aftermath that she has a hard time with others and caring for herself. This new story helps her face her past and move on. It also pushes her to confront the issues she has in her relationship with her police officer boyfriend. The past storyline had me hooked as well. I loved the relationship between Katie, Ce-Ce, Roberta, and Sonia. They all have suffered and form a deep bond. There is genuine love and affection between them. The book really highlights the power of friendship and found family, which is a trope I adore!
