This is, at heart, a story of revenge, and it is so intricately woven and fantastically told. Like any good Night Vale tale it makes little sense at times, but it keeps you captivated and desperate for more. The old woman's life unfolds and takes the reader on daring adventures on the high seas, and on secret missions that involve careful planning and murder. Each tale is somehow connected and in the end you are enraged for everything this old woman has endured. You are right there with her seeking her righteous vengeance. This is also a book about how easily we can be swayed or deceived by those we love and trust. How blind we are to the truth when someone we loves tells us to look the other way. The old lady was truly ignorant to how horrible the world could truly be, and it costs her dearly. So much of what she does she never truly learns from, and because she cannot give up on this revenge plot she will live for an eternity seeking something she lost. The characters in this novel were memorable, especially her crew of friends/thieves/spies. They loved each other fiercely, worked hard to help each other, and were willing to die to complete her revenge. For all the times she was lied to, her friends showed her true trust and love. She learned so much from them that it helps her complete her future revenge schemes. But while most of this book deals with a lot of betrayal and pain, there is also humor. The parts involving Craig are so ludicrous and crass that you do not think they could be true. How she twists and turns his life, seemingly in the best way possible to ensure he has a loving family. But the actual truth is much darker, so the laughter laced in there is kind of nice to combat the bleak reality. A good balance.
