The banter in this book is phenomenal. I mean right of the bat you can tell these two are bonkers about one another, but denying it. I could not stop chuckling at how dumb they were. I loved both of these emotionally repressed morons so much. Kit is especially not smart when it comes to others emotions. Although, I will say I was annoyed at how often Kit apologized to others about his legitimate feelings that caused him to have emotional outbursts. The amount of "protecting" his family did for him, which only destroyed his own confidence and made him feel as though he was outside of their unit infuriated me. He is an adult, be honest with him, allow him to be honest with you, and let him help. Do not use his illness as an excuse to exclude.
The story was very interesting and it had me hooked wondering how Kit was going to find his way out of being a sacrifice. The pace was good and the characters memorable, even if the main focus is Kit and his relationship with Ethan. Kit has an unhealthy jealousy of Ethan, all because of being raised differently due to his inability to travel because of his illness, so Ethan became the son that Kit could physically not be. This created a rift between them that stopped them from realizing their true feelings for each other sooner. Ethan though, has always been honest with himself, he loves Kit and will do anything for him, even if that means never telling him the truth, protecting him, and putting his own love life through the ringer because he cannot have the man he truly loves. As I said, both are emotionally inept. I also liked how honest this book was about Kit's illness, his seizures. His illness is not brushed aside, or just something that happens to him off the page. He lives with them constantly and it is mentioned often on page, he even experiences a couple seizures on the page. You hear the parts of his life that were filled with seizure moments and how different people would handle them, seeing for yourself who truly cared for Kit and who did not. These seizures impact Kit's life and have made it impossible for him to do certain things he wishes he could, but that is okay as he finds other ways to accomplish things. He must be more cautious, follow his body cues when it comes to a possible oncoming seizure. He is actively seeing a doctor and seeking treatment and a possible way to stop the seizures. This book did not magically cure Kit, and even with a God's power he still was inside his body which had limits. It was raw, and real, and honest. Okay, so this book did remind me of Indiana Jones, which was my hope. It had all the greatest elements. Mysticism, bad guys, adventure, jaguars, danger, a fearless adventurer who is tasked with caring for a newby adventurer. Love, triumph, daring escapes, Archeological finds of the century. And Kit is the guy who says these must go to the people, they are not to be hoarded. Because, he is a scholar and knows that these items are important to the culture of those who live on that land. It also had locals who helped and guided, who knew the land, who protected it, and who helped when the bad guys were being their worst. Just an overall fantastic adventure story with two memorable mcs who banter and bother everyone around them with their bantering. I will for sure be picking up more books by this author. Great first book of the year, hoping this is the trend for my 2024 reading.
