Teacher is an interesting character, completely devoting himself to caring for this girl, while also studying much about the outside world and the disease spreading. They venture to a nearby abandoned town for food and comforts for Shiva, as Teacher needs no sustenance. Shiva is a naive child, who often puts herself in danger, as she does not understand the risks she takes when leaving her little cottage. Teacher is unable to tell her the truth about her Aunt abandoning her, in order to save her life, but condemning her to a life of solitude and danger. The shading is dramatic, adding darkness to the world around Shiva and Teacher. However, the cottage they inhabit is filled with light and warmth. Their relationship reveals that the fear of these Outsiders may be unfounded. The soldiers from the Inside are also depicted to be all in white, but their business outside of their walls is dark and terrible, as they dispose of bodies. So, white and black interchange between good and evil. Shiva is often bathed in white, while Teacher is reduced to darkness and shadows, but the two exist harmoniously. This manga is a mix of fairy tale and plague tale. It is meant to be a tale of good vs. evil, where the lines are blurred and the truth confusing. The first manga is just an opening or introduction to a vast world of danger, intrigue, and interesting characters. It reads so well and kept me glued to each frame until the final page. The detailing is intricate and beautiful. I was grasping for more and cannot wait to read the next chapter in Shiva's journey. Is she immune? Is the teacher really a monster? What is this sickness? Who are the real monsters? I highly recommend this manga! Especially to fans of dark, twisting tales, involving sickness, grey morals and depth.
