Wes is in complete awe of Adam's parenting, of his caring, truthful, attentive, and protective nature. He does not shy away from what interests Gus, even when it is something he has a phobia about. He is willing to do anything for her, and is willing to accept when he is wrong and learn and grow. Adam is continuously wowed by Wes's knowledge, his smarts, and his subtle kindness. Wes goes out of his comfort zone in order to help Gus, and Adam is touched when he does. They slowly begin to open up to one another, finding comfort and warmth during the holiday season. They also develop their relationship with Gus as a main focus. She is a huge part of Adam's life and he refuses to let her feel like an outsider or a burden. He left one relationship because of that situation, which also scarred his heart. So, it is nice to see Wes understand and work hard to incorporate Gus. In fact, he connects initially with Gus because they are so similar. Gus and Wes share similarities in their love of science and facts. Both prefer reptiles, nocturnal animals, and getting messy with their experiments. Gus is as honest about her feelings about the relationship as both Adam and Wes. She is also very protective of her father and his emotions, knowing that he is prone to crying and feeling all those big feelings. This book delves deeply into how parents affect their children, both positively (in Gus's case) and negatively (in both Adam and Wes's case). Adam is continuously unlearning his Father's abusive lessons about what a man should be, while Wes is working to distance himself from the selfishness of his father. It was quite sad to see how hurt they were by their upbringing, but also inspiring to see them create their own loving family of friends, becoming family to each other, and the genuine support system they build around them with love. A lovely, touching, romantic holiday story about what family truly means. Adam and Wes may seem broken, but they are slowly mending both by themselves and with each other. Thank you so much to Harlequin Publicity Team for sending me a finished copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
