The diaries dive into relationships on location, the briefness of them, and the infatuation a young woman develops for an older, more experienced man. We also glean insight into Carrie as a person, the person behind Leia, her self deprecation, her doubts, her dislike of her own body, her faking confidence with talking and sharing stories while on set. Ms. Fisher reveals that on set she behaved as she thought others would expect and that may have misled Harrison Ford to believe she was more experienced with men and relationships than she really was. She explores first love, attachment, and the pain that comes with longing, not knowing, and secrets kept. Ms. Fisher also talks about her regret and shame about being with a married man. She also explains a bit about life with a famous mother and equally famous, but absent, father. That she did not want to go into the show business life, having grown up in the spotlight and knowing how fickle a mistress it could be (with her Mother having lost much of her wealth and fame). However, she was also tempted to try out for roles and see what she could do. Landing the Leia gig was a fluke in her eyes, as she thought she had done poorly during auditions and could not believe she was cast. She was naive, gullible, trusting and alone in Britain, having dropped out of school to make what felt like a B movie. She was filming a space fantasy that would soon thrust her, reluctantly, into stardom. This character she was playing would eventually overshadow her and consume her life (it would never be her own again). This was an easy, eye-opening, enjoyable read. Ms. Fisher was unflinching in her honesty and humorous. Her dry wit brought the book to life, helped pull her words off the page and made the reader feel as though they too were on the set of the future first ever "blockbuster". Her poetry was charming, her diaries stark and love struck, her emotions dripping off the page. This book made her more approachable and human, less like the unattainable Princess everyone sees her as (without really seeing her and only seeing a fabricated character). I highly recommend this novel to both fans and non-fans alike.
