However, in this novel, Holly Black allows for more back story and growth of character. Cardan's manipulation, his cruelty, begins to be explained and some of it disproved. While Jude's underhandedness and trickery are paying off, she also has to begin trusting others and opening her heart. In the other two novels I felt that both Jude and Cardan were one dimensional characters. Now, Jude and Cardan finally decide to have an honest conversation and their motivations become more clear and their feelings more realistic and understandable. The whole series I hated Taryn, thought she was a terrible sister and human, but in this novel she does a complete 180 and proves her worth. I liked the shocking beginning of the book, for reasons involving a certain character that I despised. I also really enjoyed some of the new characters introduced, or given more involvement in the story. I thought these characters added to plot development and character growth. The unfolding of the story is well done, it kept me gripped until the end. While it may have seemed the ending was a bit abrupt, I think it fit well with the storyline. Also, it kept the repetitiveness, which was overwhelming in the other novels, at bay. The court intrigue was more interesting and the battles not too overly dramatic. I found the chemistry between Jude and Cardan to finally be believable and actually worth while, as opposed to just hate fueled lust/pleasure. By the end my dislike of them was gone and I could appreciate the hardships and battles they overcame throughout their time in Elfhame. It will never be my favourite series, but the final novel helped to raise it to a great read.
