This book was something else. Half the time I was in a rage spiral for Patricia and mouthing off to the horrible husbands/fathers in this book as though they could hear me and were not fictional. Their blind ignorance and utter disregard for the words and emotions of their wives. The amount of gaslighting and guilt that Patricia is put through, while trying to protect her children and the neighbourhood. I wanted to punch them all for her. I could see why she did what she did with the pills, out of anger and spite. Her husband is a top notch emotional abuser who also regularly cheats on her, but she brushes it aside because the only person it hurts is herself. She puts up with so much for her children, neglecting her own mental health and happiness. But I loved when the other fucking women in this story, who were supposed to be her friends and support, finally showed up. Only took one of them being seriously harmed for them to finally listen. But, when they did, those women were no holds barred. They made a plan and they executed it meticulously. My favourite character though was Mrs. Greene. She was blunt, she put up with nothing, and she was furious at the world and what little regard it had for her community. Especially when it came to well meaning white women who promise something they know they cannot do. Mrs. Greene went through hell for this lot, with little to show for it, but all so her sons could be safe. She did the most and was given the least credit. This book is graphic and had me cringing and feeling ill when it came to what this "man" was doing. The descriptions had me clutching my pearls and gasping in shock and disgust. I enjoyed that it was not your run of the mill vampire novel, that the creature was a little different. The icing on the cake, his downfall was being a white man; believing he would not be found out, that he had a right to do what he did, that women would just bow to him, that Southern mothers were weak and could do nothing to stop him, that he is a one-of-a-kind gift...hahahahaha! And the end, vindication!!!! I was cheering on Patricia.
