Rupi's distinctive writing style and voice can be read throughout the collection. Her words empower and endear the reader to her personal experiences. Everything she writes rings true and meaningful, each line purposeful, each word selected for its punch. There were no poems where I thought it was just thrown in as filler, and the poems selected for each section were perfectly aligned with that sections meaning. These are poems about self healing, self love, finding ourselves in the face of loss, adversity, culture, and our own doubts and insecurities. I also love the amount of emotions she expresses in terms of her mother and her mother's influence on her life. The generational gap, the freedom that she is able to experience, which her mother did not have. Motherhood and feminism, the female form, were important aspects of this collection. Rupi uses her words to reflect on a women's monthly period as beautiful, the maker of life, and should not be shameful or hidden. Women are not meant to hide who there are, are not meant to be second class or subjected to the will and whims of men. Women are powerful, proud, creative, emotional, and full of depth and strength. The illustrations throughout are whimsical and wonderful. They add a distinctive feel to certain poems, they bring out the emotion and meaning. They capture the readers heart with their simplicity and beauty. The black and white, line drawings, do not detract from the words, but blend and mold to them. I highly recommend any poem by Rupi Kaur, as they are beautiful, emotional, real, powerful, and heartfelt. My favourite poem: "upon my birth my mother said there is god in you can you feel her dancing"
