This world that Mercy and Hart live in is so fascinating, a truly strange western/fantastical world full of old and new gods, demi-gods, zombies, a magical portal realm, and more. It took a while to fully grasp these new concepts and ideas, but I like that in a fantasy novel (that it is not like our world, but has some things that you can comprehend or seem similar). The world building was phenomenal and the writing original. The western romance genre fused so well with this wild west fantasy world. The romance was sizzling, even is it did take over half the book to get it going. Hart was so dreary and dark, a brooding hero, but utterly charming and loveable when he truly tries. His life is full of heartbreak and uncertainty, worry about giving his heart if he will have to watch all those he cares for die. Mercy is a firecracker and I loved her. I wanted to slap her inconsiderate family though, with their callous disregard for her dreams while all focusing on their own. I think, though, my favourite characters were the nimkilim Bassareus and Horatio. The weird bipedal, giant rabbit and the owl who wears human clothes. They can talk and they used to serve the gods. Bassareus is a hardened rabbit who accepts drink for payment and Horatio is staunch, well dressed, and a perfectionist. These two brought humour to every scene they were in and I could read a book just about their hijinks, quite honestly. And when the two of them met near the end of the book, perfection. The storyline was also fascinating, with Hart having to deal with reanimated corpses, and learning about the interesting way in which they are dispatched. I loved taking in the lore behind their burial practices, their new gods, the old gods, what Tanria happens to be. Hart and Mercy are working to find out the same information, which in this way makes this sort of a western mystery laced with romance and adventure. Every genre you could hope for in a novel is in here! This is a book full of heart, humour, and magic. It is sure to keep you reading until the happy end.
