This novel is about the connection between Fathers and their sons. How this relationship shapes the personality of the young boy and continues a vicious cycle of parenting. That the bonds can both encourage or destroy a young boy's life. Tom, specifically, is desperately trying to connect with his son, trying to forge what he feels has always been a thin relationship. He feels like a failure, that everything he does is wrong, feels his wife was the real, caring, emotionally present parent. The Whisper Man was convicted 20 years earlier for the murder of five young boys. DI Peter Willis was the detective who caught The Whisper Man, Frank Carter, but he feels responsible for the final boys death and for never having found the remains. He feels the case is still unfinished and it consumes his life; although, it gives him purpose in his lonely isolation. This new disappearance rattles him, puts him close to the edge. It also reintroduces him to a past he tries hard to hide from. The writing could sometimes be repetitive, but the narrative is well put together. It was terrifying, spine tingling, and not something you would want to read alone, at night. The killer is a true monster. The boys he hunts are vulnerable, scared, hurting, lonely, and too trusting of strangers. There is also a rhyme that lingers throughout your mind well after the final page. Not only is there a killer on the loose, but young Jake Kennedy tends to talk to 'invisible' friends. This adds a ghost story, paranormal element, which blends really well with the rest of this dark crime novel. While the ghosts are continuously either dismissed or unacknowledged, there is continuous doubt as to whether they are figments of Jake's mind or not. This is another occurrence where the author allows the reader to come to their own conclusions. A great mystery read, thrilling and terror inducing. Highly recommend checking it out.
