What a wonderful adaptation of my favourite Shakespeare play. Loved the addition of other Shakespeare characters from outside of this particular play (small easter egg for Romeo and Juliet in one scene). Tanya (Titania Queen of the fairies) and Ron (Oberon her King) are the social elite at school, and are still fairies. They run the dance committee and are pretty clueless when it comes to humans. Them and Puck add a lot of humor. And yes, as one of Shakespeare's comedies, this graphic novel has a lot of funny moments within it, including the infamous knees and tall yellow stockings scene. I enjoyed that there were very real moments between both Vi and Orsino and Vi and Olivia. It added depth to their story and helped to create a lasting bond even after all was revealed. Orsino is a goth poet and that interpretation had me in stitches and actually worked so well. His instagram was ridiculous, but just had me smiling (because yes to all of that) and his brothers continuously picking on him for it (classic). I did wish there was a bit more story, as I felt it could have been a little beefier. But, the illustrations were whimsical and eye catching. The colours vibrant at times and muted during moments of sadness and revelation. The last bit is darker, but in a purple that exudes twilight and magic, emphasizing all that occurs at the Twelfth Grade Night dance. The relationship between Vi and Sebastian is so interesting. The bracelets that act as a connection between them, gifted to them by their late father. They have an inability to communicate what they want to each other, but also are clearly important to each other. The twin vibes are so there! The storm at sea that separated them in the actual play is represented here as a metaphor for what is happening in their lives. Their separation, their lack of communication, the feeling that they are losing each other while drowing in their lives. I am excited to see more of Arden High and be introduced to more famous Shakespearean characters. I wonder what delicious plots will be cooked up!
