Each interviewee has a harrowing tale to tell, whether they escaped immediately or were forced to kill family and friends, all of the tales are in some way painful, heartbreaking, tragic. Each of the stories they tell show the depths a person will sink in order to survive, the fear induced adrenaline that pushes survivors past where they thought they could go morally. There were aspects of the book I disliked. I was especially skeptic of the authors take on how each country would react to the zombie plague, the reactions seemed very stereotypical and one dimensional. As well, after living through a pandemic, it was mostly wrong. Some of the representations were terribly problematic. And, as a Canadian, I was personally annoyed that the interviewee in Canada was an American who fled the States to go North to avoid the walking dead. There are so many American viewpoints, this was unnecessary. Also, lots of American rah! rah! in the novel. Which has been done to death in these kinds of movies and novels, so it was a bit cringe to see it happening again here. Same with the ratio of men interviewed versus women. However, I liked that there were many different backgrounds to appreciate the different perspectives and experiences. How those who have already lived through tragedy are prepared to fight, while those who are pampered are unprepared. The instance of celebrities hunkering down in a fortress, but live broadcasting their location, only to have it broken into and overrun by desperate citizens seeking shelter was hilarious and a great story of comeuppance. The audiobook was the way to go for this book, as it was the perfect medium to convey a feeling of truth, of reality, to a very fictional book. The narrators were all able to bring their characters to life, instilled a purpose within them, projected their dreams, their reality within this new society, conveyed emotion that touched the listener. It was easy to sympathize, to be shocked, to be sad, to cheer for the survivors, and tp wonder how far you would go were you to face the same terrifying situations they did.
